A Word From The Pastor
Dear Sherwood Family,
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. (2 Corinthians 3:17)
Independence Day is one of my favorite days of the year. Some of my fondest childhood memories involve grilling out, eating homemade ice cream, and watching fireworks on July 4th. I have always known that Independence Day is a time to celebrate freedom!
Now that I am older, I understand more about the significance of this holiday. I have been taught about the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War which followed. I have learned about the many men and women who gave so much for our freedom – and the freedom of others in this world – down through the generations. I have come to appreciate that freedom is not free.
Independence Day means a lot to us Americans, but it should also remind us Christians of the precious freedom from sin that has been purchased for us by our Lord Jesus. That freedom is also not free, because through His shed blood, Jesus “bought us with a price” (1 Cor. 6:20). The sacrifice of Jesus should never be far from our minds.
And much like we celebrate our freedom as Americans on July 4, we should also celebrate our eternal freedom in Jesus every day. How have you celebrated your gift of eternal life today? How have you thanked God for His Spirit which brings freedom? Let freedom ring!
Sherwood, let’s pray with urgency, live in faithfulness to God, and never stop building the Kingdom.
