A Word From The Pastor
Dear Sherwood Family,
“Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.” (Acts 6:3)
The position of deacon was established very early in church history. In fact, its origins are found in Acts 6, when the apostles in the Jerusalem church became overwhelmed with the many important tasks and difficulties that were taking place in the church. The apostles needed help and the church needed help – and the position of deacon was the solution.
This passage makes it clear that the Jerusalem church as a whole was called to select their deacons, just as we have the opportunity to select our deacons at Sherwood. We will do this in early June, and it is important that all of us to begin praying about our nominations. As the verse above notes, the immediate qualifications of a deacon are a good reputation, a full indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and the gift of wisdom. This is a high standard! 1 Timothy 3:8-13 contains more specific qualifications for deacons, and I encourage you to read over that as you pray.
Sherwood is very blessed with an outstanding group of active deacons. If we call upon the Lord and keep on seeking out biblically qualified men, then I believe we will continue to have wonderful servant-leaders as deacons of our church.
Sherwood, let’s pray with urgency, live in faithfulness to God, and never stop building the Kingdom.
